On September 22nd, In Need Home was graced with a large number of visitors from Japan, France, and Uganda. Akiko, Japanese volunteer at In Need Home, organised a Japanese food party for us. This event was dubbed “Omusubi”
Omusubi is one of Japan’s signature dishes. It is just a simple rice ball. Please see the photograph below.
Although it is not as visually appealing as sushi, Omusubi is a comforting home-cooked dish.
For example, it reminds me of a fun time I had on an excursion with my friends. We planned this Japanese meal to celebrate with the kids while also making them happy.

Taka, a Japanese volunteer, was our sue chef and oversaw the cooking. In Need Home employees also participated in the cooking class and learned how to prepare Japanese cuisine.
Tomatoes, rice, karaage (Japanese chicken), and Japanese boiled pumpkins were on the menu for the day.
Our children enjoyed not only the food but also the special time they spent with the visitors.
Furthermore, on the same day, we secretly organised a ceremony to congratulate our Executive Director, Michael, on completing his Master’s degree in Monitoring and Evaluation.
Through his experience, he gave the children a meaningful massage: “Dear children, do not worry; you will make it too one day, regardless of your background.” I was once a child like you, but I am now able to achieve this through obedience, hard work, and resilience.
He has worked for In Need Home for many years, planning for the children and the community from which they come. I am confident that his accomplishments inspired our children.
It was an unforgettable day for In Need Home. Our children want to have such a party again, and the Omusubi Party may become an annual event for In Need Home.
