It has been 3 years since my last visit at In Need Home after Covid 19. During that time, I got to visit the children’s families and see how the children and their parents would live their daily lives, living in the slums. It was a very new experience for me and it was very saddening. Many of the children’s mothers were single mothers who had to sell fruit and take on other jobs to make ends meet. The mothers would take care of their many children alone, all while barely being able to pay the house rent.

It made me realize how lucky we are to live the lives we do today, with a big house to shelter us, money to pay for that house, a comfortable bed, a loving family, and even the money to buy mosquito nets.

“Gratitude turns what we have into enough” — Unknown

We should always be grateful for what we already have, that is the lesson I have learnt from In Need Home. I think In Need Home does a great job at showing gratitude, because even though they have less, the children are still able to smile so brightly, and that really amazes me. Especially because many of the children are sexually abused, neglected, orphans, or HIV positive. Seeing the children happy like that despite having these struggles made me realize we should be grateful for even the smallest of things.

One thing I like about In Need Home is that it is a gift-giving experience, as I teach the children new things, I am also learning new things and gaining valuable lessons and insights in return. Now that I have returned back to In Need Home, I hope to continue learning new lessons from them and I also pray that the children may continue to smile and appreciate the small things in life.
