In Need Home and Ecotide Foundation have collaborated to prevent children from the Namuwongo slum from suffering from malnutrition. Various plants such as beans, Sukuma wiki (collard greens) among others have been planted in plastic bottles and the initiative has been called “The Green Wall Garden”. This not only provides nutritious food to the children at In Need Home and Namuwongo slums, but it is also a sustainable way to engage young people in environmental conservation and climate action.

We got big water bottles and cut them to get where we can plant the seedlings. Plants in bottles can also be an attractive and creative way to display plants, adding a unique touch to area décor.

These plants are cared for in a way that they are watered, and we also add manure on them because it helps in provision of essential nutrients. We also water them because it helps to dissolve nutrients in the soil, making them accessible for plant roots to absorb.

We planted these plants for mainly food production in a way that if we harvest them, the children at In
Need Home are able to get what to feed on, we also use these plants for the children’s education
purposes because they study about them in class. Additionally, we planted them for aesthetic
and recreational purposes because plants enhance the beauty at In Need Home. We look forward to planting more plants at In Need Home in order to get sufficient food to feed the children and to also make our home look good. Our prime goal is sustainable, all year quality food production at In Need Home to improve nutrition of children at In Need Home.
