What We Do

In Need Home is a transformative organization dedicated to empowering vulnerable children, women, and families in Uganda’s most marginalized communities. Through programs focused on education, economic empowerment, and child protection, In Need Home provides access to quality schooling, vocational training, and financial literacy to break the cycle of poverty. The organization also addresses critical issues like child labor, gender inequality, and violence, offering support to survivors and advocating for systemic change. By fostering self-reliance and resilience, In Need Home creates sustainable solutions that enable individuals and communities to thrive, ensuring every child has the opportunity to dream, grow, and succeed.

Child Protection

Every Child Deserves Protection

Over half of Uganda’s children face violence, with 68% of boys and 59% of girls experiencing physical abuse, and one in three girls and one in six boys enduring sexual abuse, often leading to lifelong trauma.

i. Popularising Laws
Despite strong child protection laws, many are unaware due to language barriers and lack of awareness. In Need Home advocates for their implementation, especially in slums where abuse is rampant.

ii. Strengthening Child Protection Systems
Uganda’s child protection system is weak, with poor coordination and cultural barriers. In Need Home promotes initiatives like the 116 helpline and works with local councils and police to improve reporting.

iii. Ending Child Labour in Slums
Over 2 million children in Uganda are engaged in labour, often missing school. In Need Home collaborates with communities and authorities to end exploitation and uphold child rights.

iv. Supporting Victims of Violence
Many slum children face unreported sexual violence, leading to trauma and HIV/AIDS. In Need Home provides early intervention and support to help survivors recover.

Education For The Less Priviledged

Since 1997, Uganda’s Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) have tripled enrolment, but progress is stalling due to high dropout rates, poor literacy, and overcrowded, under-resourced schools. Millions of children, especially in poor areas, are left behind.

i) Basic Education
We provide formal and non-formal education to underserved children in slums, ensuring access to quality learning. We engage communities to promote inclusive, equitable education and are establishing a skills center in Namuwongo for youth and young parents who missed schooling.

ii) Inclusive Education
Girls from poor families often drop out during puberty due to lack of sanitary pads and inadequate facilities. We teach girls and young mothers to make low-cost reusable pads and promote menstrual hygiene, helping more girls stay in school.

Household Empowerment

This program strengthens caregivers’ and communities’ financial capacity to ensure vulnerable children access safety, healthcare, education, and basic needs. In Need Home supports slum caregivers through savings, credit, skills training, employment, and market linkages to reduce economic vulnerability.

i) Financial Education
Teaches wise financial decisions, saving, spending, borrowing, and debt management, while introducing clients to financial services like money transfers and insurance.

ii) Income-Generating Activities
Supports legal income-boosting activities like backyard farming, micro-enterprises, handicrafts, and briquette making.

iii) Market Linkages/Facilitation
Connects entrepreneurs with buyers and suppliers to help grow their enterprises.

iv) Skills Training
Provides knowledge and skills for securing livelihoods or pursuing occupations.

v) Village Savings and Loans
A community-managed microfinance model where members pool savings, provide loans, and share interest at the end of a cycle.
